When I got to ACU as a freshman one of the first guys I met was Patrick. We became friends immediately. What I noticed about him was the fact that he seemed much more interested in spiritual things than I was. He talked more about faith. He spent time with God in scripture. He wanted to get plugged into a church body and serve. He was genuinely kind and humble. What I realized in that first semester was, he wanted more of God in a way that I did not really understand. Turns out, there were a few others like Patrick that met weekly to wrestle with God, with sin, and with the Bible. They invited me and my life has never been the same.
I need people in my life who want more of God. I need people who function as spiritual fathers. I need advice, counsel, support, and direction. I also need people who will love me enough to correct and rebuke me. This is the body of Christ. We need each other. There are times when I give those things to others, but today I want to talk about how we as followers of Jesus must be looking to take those things from those on this road who are willing to be spiritual guides. Like Timothy with Paul, Joshua with Moses, and Elisha with Elijah, we need to take what our spiritual fathers are wanting and willing to give us.
