A Beautiful Mess

In my house, we refer to our third child as "Tornado Ellee". All you have to do is walk by her room and see why. The room is a constant disaster area. It is not because she is irresponsible or obstinate. It is not because she likes her room to look like a bomb blew up in it. It is simply the way it is. Seriously, she can clean it one morning and by the afternoon it looks like she did nothing. Don''t get me wrong, I do wish it was picked up better than it is now, but make no mistake, it is a beautiful mess.

The mess means there is life. The mess means there is activity, joy, laugher, and emotion. Lots and lots of emotion! The mess means there are arguments with her siblings. It means there are good grades and not so good grades. It means there are wins and there are loses. The mess means there is life, overflowing life.

I see the church the same way. Many have an idea of what the body is supposed to look like. There is a picture of perfection that is unrealistic. Life means messy. The only church that has no mess is a dead church. Sometimes I think our picture of the way things ought to be blinds us from the beauty of the way things are. In the church there is activity, joy, laughter, heartache, sin, struggle, faith, and conflict. It''s a absolute mess, and I love it.

Jesus calls us to love one another. Its messy business. I like it more than a clean room.
