"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight." C.S. Lewis
I have never known anyone personally who has "an excessive and unhealthy interest" in our enemy. At the same time, I cannot say I know many who "disbelieve in their existence" either. I think most would say they just do not think about it. The problem with that stance is we leave ourselves vulnerable.
The text itself speaks of the enemy. Genesis 3 paints a picture of an accuser and a deceiver. Job paints a picture of a spiritual being who is under the authority of God and yet wishes us great harm. What about Jesus in Matthew 4? What do these three temptations tell us about who our enemy is and what he does? I Peter invites us to be alert and warns us that the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion.
While we have no interest in making more of our enemy than we should, we need to wake up. We should see the darkness for what it is. Our enemy is not flesh and blood! Paul tell us it is the rulers, authorities, and powers of this dark world.
Father, this morning, wake us up to see who we should be fighting today and who we should not. Open the eyes of our hearts Lord... that we might see! In the name of Jesus, Amen.
