The Most Important Thing About Us
Almost 250 of you joined us for a retreat this weekend attempting to answer one question: What is the purpose of our Tribe? Are we simply a fort that sits on the corner of 45th and Cornell in Amarillo, Texas? Are we only a place for insiders? Are we an institution built to protect a set of agreed upon beliefs? We do not think so. The church is a movement of love that is created by many individuals who put Christ at the center of the story as we seek to love others as He has loved us.
This weekend we dreamed again about what kind of a people we are and how God changes the world through us. This morning, we simply take another step in this dream by looking at the Prodigal Son story to remind us of our identity in Christ and in the Story of God. Too often we are like the oldest son, trying to earn our identity and place in the story, or like the youngest son, not thinking we are worthy of our beloved identity and a place in the story. The prodigal son reminds us that the most important thing about us isn't what we do or the mistakes we have made. The most important thing about us is that we are a son/daughter of God. We are his beloved. And the most important thing about my family is that they are also sons/daughters of God. Living in this Gospel truth frees us to live in the story of God and join Him as he leads this movement of love.
