God's Highest And Noblest Call

Why would anyone want to be an Elder in the church?

It is a good question, I suppose. Though it makes me sad that any Christian would ever ask it in such a way as to consider it a negative or unenviable task.

Because to desire Elder-ship is to desire the noblest of tasks available to man. I don't expect those who do not know the glory of God to get this, but every Christian should. Anyone who believes and follows Jesus should.

I'm not overstating it when I say that the church is the single most promising organization in the world. If the Kingdom of God is going to be practiced in a powerful and winsome way, it will be practiced by the church. If the Kingdom is going to infiltrate and transform the world, it will be because of God's church. If the gospel matters, and is going to be heard by the human race – a race so desperate for light, rescue, healing, life, and hope - then it will be because of the church.

God so loved the world that He sent Christ down in a human body to tell them so. When that body died for it (and us), he decided to continue sending the good news of His love through the body of Christ – the church.

The church carries what hope is left in the world. And the church is led and shepherded by Elders.

"Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task." - 1 Timothy 3:1.

The shepherding and stewardship of God's church is the noblest, most excellent desire, available to you. And some of you are called to do so as Elders. My God bless us as we recognize who you are.
