Oh, the stories we do not know.
I heard another story yesterday. I was in my men's group.
Different small groups at Southwest have different ways of operating. They all have Jesus as their aim, the gospel at their heart, and formation into Christ's image as the goal. But all of our small groups have different "doorways," if you will, into the transforming relationships with each other and with God.
Our group's doorway is our story. When someone new comes to our men's group, whether they know it or not, they have joined with a group of men who know each other's stories. So, "baptism" into our little fellowship is when you take the hot seat and you tell yours. It is then that you have made us your friends.
I heard another story last night, from another "character" in our city who I otherwise would have never noticed.
At the end of his letters, the apostle Paul made a habit of listing a bunch of "characters" from his life. We know little to nothing of these friends. They are minor characters in the Bible story, but like you, they each have one.
One such person was a woman named Priscilla. Though we have precious little about her, we have enough to glean that she was a major difference maker with the gifts of courage and teaching. And she used them.
As we finish this summer series, and launch into the Fall - which serves as another new beginning for our small groups and for each of us - I hope we will seriously consider adopting her spirit.
