Whether you call them unsung heroes, supporting cast, or minor characters, we have been looking all summer at folks mentioned in scripture that did not play what we might consider a "major role", yet made a major impact.
Why are we doing this? Well, for those familiar with it, this is a new and unique way to approach scripture with fresh eyes. While the major characters are major for a reason, and we should not neglect them, these minor ones made the text for a reason, too. We should ask why.
Which leads to a second reason: These minor characters embody Christ-like qualities and highlight Godly attributes and ideas that we may never notice or address otherwise. What treasures they are!
But the most important reason to me is personal. I feel much more like a minor character in the grand scheme of human history, let alone in light of God's eternity. Even though I know it is not true, I sometimes lift the David's, Samuel's, Peter's and Paul's of scripture up as untouchable heroes that I can't relate (or live up) to.
But the almost-no-names, the barely-mentioned, and somewhat unremarkable folks? I can relate to them, and there is something deeply meaningful about believing that, just like them, I can make a major impact in the Story of God even though I am a minor character in the big scheme of things.
So far this summer, I've covered 4 men and 4 women. How do I break the tie? Today, I'll introduce you to a man named Hur. He is a true behind-the-scenes guy, without whom - and I'm not exaggerating here - God's people would have never made it to the Promised Land. They would not have even survived. No matter who we are, we can all be "Hur."
