Tearing Down Barriers

"Jesus always stands on the other side of our comfort zone." - Jennie Allen

It was the last week of my second grade year at Southlawn Elementary School. Jonathon Schaefer rode a bus from across town to spend the day with a group of white kids who would soon be his classmates. I was chosen to be Jonathon's guide for the day, and it was a great day. He made one more kid in my class that loved sports and wanted to play basketball during recess.

It didn't cross my 8-year old mind then, but looking back I wonder how much angst his mom & dad felt putting him on that bus that day. The truth is I will never know that feeling.

We live in a time when race relations seem to be at an all-time low. Our ability and desire to sit down together and talk about difficult things seem to be at an all-time low as well. Sadly, the family of God hasn't done a good job of stepping into this conversation either. It is often said that the most segregated time in our country is Sunday morning.

This morning we want to start the conversation to at least do our part to change that. My friend and brother Isaac Butler will be joining us this morning to talk about race relations and how we might start to tear down these barriers in the name of Christ.

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Let it be so.
