Investing In Your Own Prayer Life

The Bible states clearly that you should pray. But many are surprised to discover that there is very little in the text about the overall human experience of prayer.

For that, we depend on each other's stories, especially the ones of those who have gone before us who have troubled themselves to write them down in books. I am so grateful to so many of them. As a disciple of Jesus, I have read about and experimented with prayer more than any other area of discipleship. Because of this, as your minister, I feel I can do you no greater service than to inspire you to invest in your own prayer life.

So, in addition to the free study on the prayer life of Jesus that is in the lobby, I list here a few books that you might consider investing in as an exploration of other folks experiences that have helped me. There are so many, so I've limited this list to short, simple ones that just may revolutionize your life.

The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. This is a collection of little letters about experiencing God in every moment.

Letters by a Modern Mystic by Frank Laubach. The inspiring journal of a missionary to the Philippines who set out to learn to submit to God "moment by moment."

With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray. 30 essays from a master teacher and practitioner.

Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ by Jeanne Guyon. One of the most helpful Christian books ever, by one of the best-known women in church history, written so simply because of her heart for the illiterate.

If you have a specific angle on prayer you'd like to explore, contact me at bmashburn@southwest.org and I'll help you find someone's teachings that just might help.

But listen to me, friend. Even if you don't read, pray.
