I believe that we all need "a lever and place to stand".
I don't remember who to give credit to for that phrase, but it has stuck with me. It speaks to the idea that we all want to contribute to something bigger. And not just bigger, but to something that matters.
It speaks to the idea that we want to play a role within and for something significant.
Personally, I can't remember not having this longing. I think it explained my attraction to try out for team sports, to run for Student Council, to want to join the kids in the neighborhood whatever they were doing. It explains the movies that become epic blockbusters. It explains, in a weird way perhaps, why we are so busy. We are frantically trying to do our part faithfully, and find meaning. I have always found some small places within which to scratch this itch.
But do you know where I have found it ultimately satisfied? In the church. I have found that the church serves the most universal needs that exist within human beings. I have found that the church is designed to use me just as I am - gifts and quirks and imperfections and all - in a specialized way that contributes to the whole.
In the church I have found a "lever" - a way to play a part - and a "place to stand" - uniquely mine, and surrounded by others who end up being a safe family.
Today, we celebrate the vision and mission of God that he has given to us as the Southwest church family. And how he has given us a worthy cause to leverage ourselves and our resources in a heart satisfying way.
