A story is unfolding concerning your work. How do you like it?
Is the story of your work one motivated by protection? Are you doing what you "need to do" in order to make the money you are making? Do you sacrifice your joy and sense of meaningful contribution?
Or is the story of your work one of pleasure? You've probably heard it said, "Do what you love and you won't work a day of your life." It is great to do what you love, but if what you love doesn't provide for you adequately or contribute to something greater, what about that? Is that the story you want?
Or perhaps the story of your work is one of purpose. What you do matters immensely to you. You believe in it, you know it makes a difference, serves a larger story. But does it pay? And do you like it?
The dream job for anyone would involve work that satisfies all of these desires: protection, pleasure, and purpose.
Do you have that job?
In all likelihood, you don't. Many of us are living a story through our work that sacrifices one or two of those desires for the sake of the third. But must it be this way?
I personally do not believe it does. God does not and cannot change, of course, but your work most certainly can. You may be right where God wants you, but you may not be, too. The key? We should all have a tight enough grip on God and His promises that we can have a loose enough grip on our work to allow God to guide us.
He might want you to create a new story.
