Have you ever watched a movie, or TV show, or read a book that was labeled a "mystery?" The intrigue is that there is something secret going on, some unknown truth that will explain things in the end. They hook us by playing on our desire to know what is going on. Sure enough, once the mystery is revealed, you can "see" how it fits together; how everything and everyone in the story was affected by and played a role around that mystery.
In life, have you ever encountered circumstances or met people that had you questioning what God is up to? Have you ever observed life and thought, "Maybe there is no purpose? Maybe everything is random and meaningless, and we are just moving from one tragic accident to the next, trying to survive." Have you? I have.
We are launching into a series on the book of Ephesians, where Paul uses the word "mystery" more than in any other letter he writes. Paul claims that God's plan - the mystery of God's agenda that explains nothing short of everything - has been revealed.
How great would that be? How great would it be to know what is going on? Imagine it. If we knew His plan, then we would know how to interpret everything that has happened, and everything that will happen! We would know what our role is, what the church's role is, and how to approach every single thing, and every single person, and every single circumstance.
If God would just tell us, as Paul claims He has, what God's mysterious plan is, then we could align ourselves and co-operate with Him, right in the fold of His will, for our greatest joy and His glory.
If only we knew God's mysterious plan.
