We've all had them; those experiences that end up becoming hinge-points in our own personal histories.
You know what I'm talking about. You may not like talking about them, but you know what I'm talking about.
These moments are so powerful that they alter how we view the world and explain why we do the things we do. These are the events that counselors, ministers, and close friends alike try to help us get to when we are trying to figure ourselves out. It is like all of us were created to be shaped - in part at least - by our experiences.
God knows this. He designed us this way. And since He wants to shape us, since He wants to form us into what He originally designed us to be (His sons and daughters, His image bearers) He willingly offers us the most powerful of all experiences. He offers experiences that can overwhelm and overcome all other experiences no matter how grand and inspiring, no matter how heinous and wounding. He offers us close encounters of the supernatural kind. He offers experiences with Himself.
Moses had his burning bush (Ex 3). Mary had her impossible pregnancy (Lk 1). Abraham had his test (Gen 22). Peter had his miraculous catch of fish (Lk 5). Jacob has his life changing dream (Gen 28). Hannah had her answered prayer (1 Sam 1). Paul had his Damascus Road (Acts 9). Isaiah had his vision (Is 6). Jeremiah had his touch on the mouth (Jer 1). David had his rebuke (2 Sam 12). Gideon had his signs (Jdg 6). Cornelius had his angel (Acts 10). Cleopas had his walk with Jesus (Lk 24).
Acknowledged or unacknowledged, God is working and speaking, and those who watch, listen, and join Him experience fuller lives. Turn on your spiritual radar and have your name added to the list.
