Mythbusters: You Can Handle It

If you are old enough (or culturally connected enough, or you are just a geek like me), you have heard the phrase, "Beam me up, Scotty!"

And you know without a doubt where that phrase comes from. You picture scenes from it in your head. You know the characters surrounding it. You can probably even hear one specific character saying it in the voice that you remember it being said in, and see the desperation in his face as he says it.

This phrase comes from the very first Star Trek series.

Would it surprise you to find out that in none of the 79 episodes were the words "Beam me up, Scotty" ever uttered.

It's true.

In the same way, the phrase, "God will not give you more than you can handle," is presumed to be scripture, found somewhere in the Bible. It isn't alone. Just like you won't find "God helps those who help themselves" in there, or "speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent," you will not find a text that claims that God will not give you more than you can handle.

Okay, so it's not in there. But is it true?

This is the question of the day. It is so often spoken by Christians as a means of comfort for those who have a heavy burden or as a challenge for those who are struggling, that we should know.

Because believing a myth can really mess you up, and the truth can really set you free.
