Mythbusters: We Must Protect Our Children And Grandchildren

Like it or not, the reality is that we live in a dangerous, post-Christian world. And by "world," I mean North America, including Amarillo, Texas. By "post-Christian", I mean loss of the primacy of the Christian worldview in political and cultural affairs. The Christian worldview might also be referred to as a "Biblical worldview". This is obvious from a lot of movies and TV shows we see and from various legal issues currently debated in the public forum.

Living in a dangerous, post-Christian world, there is and will be a strong motivation to do everything you can to protect your children. If we are not careful, protection of our children can become the primary purpose of our parenting and can lead to some unwanted consequences.

Tim Elmore, in his book "Generation iY", calls these "helicopter parents"- "the ones who hover over their kids, making sure they get every imaginable advantage and are protected from every imaginable danger."

Elmore continues, "Sadly, helicopter parents can damage their kids because they don't allow them the privilege of learning to fail and persevere."

Obviously, appropriate protection of your children is a function of good parenting. At different stages of your child's maturation, you will need to provide appropriate levels of protection. However, making protection of our children the primary goal or purpose of our parenting misses the mark; it is a myth that must be busted.
