In line with ancient Christian tradition, today is Resurrection Sunday, commonly called Easter, and it serves as the last day of what has been called Holy Week.
Holy Week began a week ago, with Palm Sunday. It recalls Christ riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, with the adoring crowd waving and laying down palm leaves.
While they don't actually align with what happened on these days, Monday is associated with Mary anointing Jesus at Bethany, Tuesday with the foretelling of Judas' betrayal and Peter's denial at the Last Supper, and Wednesday with Judas' actual betrayal.
Maundy Thursday is connected to the humility of Jesus in the act of washing the disciple's feet.
Good Friday, of course, has an ironic name, because it recalls the crucifixion of Jesus; the murder of God when He was a man.
Holy Saturday is a dark day that focus' on the disciple's despair, since Jesus is dead and not yet resurrected.
But Resurrection Sunday... it is on this day that the whole week is redeemed! It is on this day that Christians around the world focus on the life that the Gospel claims is available after death!
Residing in this story, the gospel story, is a worldview that views love, death, and glory differently than any human being ever would naturally. And yet, this is the view that Jesus claims is true. And it has saved an untold number of human beings from all kinds of death.
Resurrection Sunday is the claim that life is available to you.
