What Do You Remember About God?

I struggle with my memory. I have forgotten some of the most amazing things, and I know this not because I remember the things I've forgotten (obviously), but because people in my life recall some of those amazing things and I am left befuddled at how in the world I could have forgotten such a thing. This is a regular occurrence for me.

I've heard people make the case that being able to forget some things is good, but for the most part, I don't think that is right. Remembering, especially the truest things in life that should shape our character, our souls, and our days, is of paramount importance.

This is why Jesus, just before he was crucified, took a meal and used it as a mnemonic device for his followers for all time, exhorting them to "remember" him every time it is eaten. He knew they wouldn't skip eating the meal, and he didn't ever want them to skip remembering the love of God contained in the cross.

Long before Jesus did that, the people of God would sing a song that also was designed to keep them remembering the love of God. The Psalm was so intent on emblazoning the love of God into the memories of those singing it that it repeats the phrase, "His steadfast love endures forever," twenty six times!

Today, we will "sing" this song. We will focus on God. We will remember His love. May we never forget. And may the truth of His love do its good work in us every single day.
