Going On

As we finish our series on basic Christian teachings, let's not forget that the author was only listing them in order to invite his readers to "leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity." (Heb. 6:1).

To take the teachings that we have covered and not move on from them into the deeper waters of faith would be like stopping your education in the 4th grade.

The message here is that there is more.

My prayer for all of you is that the Spirit of God would penetrate your heart, cutting through the crust of comfort, your superficial satisfaction, the rusty armor of ego, the false security of busy-ness, and awake in you an inescapable hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Why would I wish this upon you? Because there is more. And I want it for you. With all my heart (read Gal 4:19).

The Hebrew writer said that if you stay in the 4th grade, repeating the same courses over and over again, remaining slow to learn, nursing only on the milk of our faith all of your life, that you will never "be acquainted with the teaching about righteousness." (Heb. 5:13)

I agree with the Hebrew writer that this would be tragic. And so I pray for you. That you will get downright sick of milk, and go hunting for solid food. Like a Man, going after it, rather than like an infant, waiting for someone to once again provide a bottle to suckle on.

"Blessed our those who hunger and thirst for righteousness," Jesus said, "for they will be filled."

May we be the church who own and master the basics, but only so that we can build on them as foundations for the impactful and rewarding life of Christ that God intends. May we be filled. Is it time for you?
