Below is a handy review of the five elementary teachings we have studied so far from the list of six in Hebrews 6.
Repentance from acts that lead to death. "I no longer intentionally sin, and I intentionally do not sin."
Faith in God. "I listen to everything God says, accept it as true, and live accordingly."
Instructions about baptisms. "I am forgiven, changed, empowered, and His."
Laying on of hands. "I have a community (that heals and blesses) and a calling (a ministry I am gifted for)."
Resurrection of the dead. "I have hope in the face of all circumstances."
Life built on these truths allows for spiritual health and human maturity. Imagine, for a moment, the alternative:
"I still do things that lead to death. I put my faith in my own wisdom. I am unforgiven, unchanged, powerless, and without a heavenly identity. I am alone and have no meaningful purpose. And I depend on circumstances in order to feel any sense of happiness."
Ouch! Who would want that? And yet far too many Christians, because they are slow to learn, live that way. Friends, one more basic teaching today, and then it is high time we own them, and move on to deeper things.
Today's teaching, elementary truth #6: Eternal Judgment. "This life is not all there is and what we do in this life matters." For many, "judgment day" and "eternal placement" is scary stuff.
Not for mature Christians. They are confident and can't wait!
