There are baby Christians, and there are mature Christians (see Hebrews 5:13-14). Just as we put our children through elementary school to lay a foundation for higher learning, there are also foundational teachings that baby Christians need to master before they can be expected to move on into maturity.
The author of Hebrews says that it would be silly to take a newborn to The Big Texan to feed it steak! That would not be natural and is unhealthy, and we all know it.
But he also says, and with holy fervor, that it is wrong to live on milk forever. How striking would it be if you saw at lunch today a full grown man or woman pulling out a freshly warmed infant's bottle as their entire meal?
The author calls long time Christians to move on from the elementary teachings, into the deeper waters of faith, which includes being teachers of others.
What is this milk? What are these elementary teachings about Christ that provide the foundational curriculum upon which maturity can be had?
This summer, we will look at the six elementary teachings about Christ that the author lists in Hebrews 6:1-2. Lessons 1 he calls "repentance from acts that lead to death."
If you are a baby Christian, enjoy this nourishing milk, made just for you so that you can grow. If you are a mature follower, celebrate these great truths that you mastered long ago and are actively teaching others.
But if you are a long time Christian, and these basic teachings are not known, practiced, and owned in your life, let this series be your last bottle of milk.
