Easter: The Death of Death

The images you will see that surround Easter in culture are those of eggs, bunnies, chocolates, and baskets.

The images you will see that surround Easter in church culture are those of nice slacks, new dresses, and bright colors.

The most important image associated with Easter, however, is the empty tomb of Jesus.

In the Christian story, the emptiness of the tomb holds the most power and the most hope. Accurately understood, the empty tomb summons the most joyful, victorious feelings a human can enjoy.

Sports fans: Think of witnessing the greatest comeback ever seen, that will be spoken of forever in awe and amazement, with your own son on the team as the hero.

Parents: Think of the couple holding their healthy baby after praying and struggling for years to get pregnant to the point of despair, loss of hope, and faith shattering doubt.

Capitalists: Think of having accrued an unpayable debt, built over many years, due to the medical bills for a loved one, only to show up one day to the news that not only has your debt been paid, but the all future payments for any need will be covered, and your loved one is healed.

Take the feeling of the greatest news you could ever imagine receiving, try to feel it fully, multiply it by infinity and then eternity, and you are coming close to the good contained in the news of the resurrection.

It represents the day that death died. The day life became available and secure for all. What will you do with it?
