Fresh Start On Your Finances

There are some of us who like to live spontaneously, by the seat of our pants, so to speak. We want to take advantage of each and every moment, scared to miss a single thing that we might regret missing later. We don't much like, and actually resist, methodical planning.

There are others of us who like to live meticulously. We like to measure, think, be prepared, and soberly make decisions. We want to be cautious and careful; scared that an indiscriminate decision might make us unprepared later. We don't much like, and actually resist, surprises.

Perhaps no area of life is more affected by these two extremes than in our finances; the former end up smiling and in debt, the latter end up scowling and with a surplus.

Christians who lean one way or the other often justify their natural approach with spiritual reasoning: the former say they are "led by the Spirit," and the latter say they are "being good stewards".

Both extremes, and everyone who is in between, can benefit from looking at their finances through a lens that accepts the existence of the Kingdom of God as real.

Is the way you handle your money the way God wants money handled? Does your approach to debt and spending reflect the Kingdom? Do you give and share in a way that follows how Jesus says you can and should?

We are called to store up treasures in heaven, not treasures on earth. To do that, you cannot throw out spontaneity or planning, but you can't neglect them either.

Today, allow the Holy Spirit to move in you, and don't leave here today without committing to getting a fresh start on your finances.
