When someone says the word 'church', what do you think of? I decided to take a poll on this question by sending out an email. The email very simply read, "Church is _______? What would you put in this blank and why? Honestly, I was a little scared about what I would get back; however, I was blessed to see how many people view the body of Christ.
This morning we are in the second week of a three week series entitled, "Growing Up". While Brian talked about our personal responsibility in this process last week, today we will wrestle with what role the church plays.
I am not a big fan of consumerism in churches. This is the mindset that some have. They believe that the church is essentially a provider of goods and services. People who view the church this way come based on their likes and dislikes. I really like the student minister. I think the children's ministry is great! I am not so sure I care for the worship leader; I think we will go somewhere else.
You get the idea here, right? Church, defined in this way, is simply a place for a member to constantly vote with their feet, their money, and their participation. But, is this really what church is? Do we define church as a place that meets our needs? I sure hope not!
Today, let's wrestle with what the church is, and is not, and see how the church was actually designed to help each of us 'Grow Up' in Christ and into his mission for each other and the world.
