Imagine Jesus leaving the glory and comfort of Heaven where he was surrounded by the unity of the angels and insulated from the world by the love of the Trinity. And then imagine Jesus' church leaving the glory and comfort of the church building where they are surrounded by the unity of brotherhood and insulated from the world by the love of the fellowship.
Jesus left Heaven, not because the world was clean and comfortable, but because it wasn't. He left to bring the Kingdom into the world. The church is to leave the building, not because the world is clean and comfortable, but because it is not, and just like our King, to bring the Kingdom to it.
How? Like he did. We serve it. We wash its filthy feet. We meet people who are less than perfect and we don't run away. We lean in. We do their lawns. We bake them goodies. We play with their children. We ask them questions that might lead us to be inconvenienced.
Listen, Southwest. This city is small and open enough, that if you want to, you can be friends with the needy. Whether they are poor, sick, lame, mentally challenged, just out of (or in) jail, drug addicted, handicapped, lonely, emotionally disturbed, abused, relationally confused, dying, hungry, depressed, grieving, or they are just bored automatons mindlessly going through life, you can be friends with them...if you want to.
Christ wanted to. He left heaven to. He died to.
Christians learn to want to, too. Leave the church building today, serve the world, and bring the Kingdom.
