Have you ever been in one of those conversations where a person is listening to your side of a story but you get the sense that they aren't truly interested in what you are saying. It's not really hard to figure this out, and let's be honest, we have all done this. Your conversation partner's response to you in this situation usually begins with something like this. "I get what you are saying and I agree with you, but..." The key word in the sentence is of course the word 'but'. What they are really communicating is that they haven't listened to a word you said and are now ready to tell you what really matters to them.
So often we treat the Gospel this way. Yes, Jesus died for my sins and it is faith alone that brings me into a saving relationship with him, but...there are a lot of things I have to do to live up to that relationship. It's hard to argue with this logic because of course, a Christian will live out their faith because that is the end result of trusting Jesus with our lives. However, many times we spend so much effort and energy on the later we forget the former. This of course is no gospel at all.
Jesus + anything = nothing. Have we given our kids the gospel of Jesus Christ or have we given the a gospel of 'sin management' as Dallas Willard would call it? Might many be tired of a treadmill Christianity? Let's refocus today on the 'real' Gospel which is truly good news!
