I stood with a couple who pointed out a window at their newly "sent to college" son who was going about his business quite independent of them. Their smiles were proud and full of faith, but also longing and a bit a nervous about the directions he would go out of their care.
I stood with a woman who has an adult son who is autistic, and a teenage daughter with Asperger's. Her eyes welled up with tears as I thanked her for the heroic love she has shown, and will show for the rest of her life.
I stood with a young woman and her parents as they spoke with confusion about how to care for their estranged sister/daughter. Their gazes were filled with deep reservoirs of intense love - a love longing to be poured out on her - but with no knowledge of how.
I sat up late with a man who is feeding children suffering and dying from malnutrition. He is trying to move political and capitalistic mountains towards compassion in a way that 2-4 million more could be fed and saved. His voice filled with excitement and sadness as he recounted the story of a little boy named Miracle.
I talked with a dad who's son was the chosen target of bullying by a movie star's son at his school in Malibu. He loves his son, wants to love the other boy, and wants his son to learn how to stand in grace and truth at the same time.
You know what Jesus did for his loved ones? For the weak and helpless? For his enemies? Among other things, he prayed for them. Prayer was where he could both express and develop his love for all people.
Today, we will do the same. Let us pray.
