Consumption

Every day we are inundated with messages about things that will make us more successful, more popular, and, ultimately, happier. If you believe the television ads and newspaper circulars, by the end of Black Friday, your life should have been easier and more convenient.

With just the right jewelry purchase presented at the right fine restaurant, your marriage will automatically be rectified and fulfilling.

he right vacation will take away all of your concerns and worries.

Our culture says that you can have it your way, in 30 minutes or less, delivered direct to your door, with easy, low, low payments - just do it! Unfortunately, even for Christians, following the culture means that we buy things we don't need, with money we don't have to impress people we don't know.

In a culture that's largely built on consuming more and more, are we being consumed by the culture or are we setting our minds on things above and not on earthly things like we're told in Colossians 3?

God blesses us far beyond what we deserve. For many of us in this place, he has blessed us financially many times over. Today, let's evaluate where our money goes: are we making conscious financial decisions about how and what we spend it on or are we simply following a culture that dictates that it doesn't really matter as long as we consume increasingly more?
