Psalm 23:5 - "You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows."
For a sheep, summer can be a time of rich, green fields, but it is also a time of insects and diseases. These tiniest of irritants can turn the glory of the summer months into a time of torture. Buzzing flies trying to get to the moisture on a sheep's head can drive a flock insane enough that they injure themselves. And scab, a common disease that comes into a flock through affectionate head-to-head contact with other sheep carrying scab.
The only solution for these is the anointing of the sheep's head with oil that serves as a remedy to scab and a repellent to flies, and the sheep is entirely dependent upon the shepherd for this oil, and it has to be done regularly, not just once.
For so many Christians, it is not the big things, but the small irritants that take our peace. We are supposed to have the mind of Christ, the attitude of Christ, but it takes so little to steal these from us.
The only solution for this is the regular anointing of our lives with the "oil" of the Holy Spirit. This anointing, too, can only come from our Shepherd, and it, too, must be done regularly, not just once.
One cup of oil will not suffice for the summer. We need to know that God has not only enough for today, but plenty for tomorrow, and forever.
He does. Don't be discouraged or afraid. Our cup runs over.
