He Restores My Soul

Perhaps it is surprising to get to verse 3 of Psalm 23 and find that David is praising his Shepherd, God, because He "restores his soul."

You would think that because of all the other things he has said about God so far, David would never need any restoring of his soul. After all, should not a soul that has God for a shepherd, is lacking nothing, is provided restful security, and is given access to God Himself to drink from - should not that soul live in a constant state of "restoration"?

You might think that, but you would be wrong.

Even David, who is so aware of and grateful for the love and presence of God in his life, had days of panic, or fear, or helplessness, or hopelessness, or shame, or sinfulness, or harassment. Yes, even David, with God as his shepherd, had bad days.

And when those moments come to you, and your soul feels devastated, and you can do absolutely nothing about it, you can know that it is God Himself who comes running to the rescue, who lovingly and firmly picks us up, dusts us off, and restores to us the life that our souls long for and thrive within.

I join David, today, in bragging about my Shepherd, and praising Him, because "he restores my soul." (Psalm 23:3)
