"Be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." - Colossians 3:15-17
Because of the focus of my earliest teachers, I was trained to think that these words of Paul to the Colossians were specific instructions against the use of musical instruments in a Sunday morning worship service.
But once I stopped making it say something it didn't, and instead let it say what it did, I saw that this text was a gem about Jesus and gratitude.
Just like we are this morning, the people then were teaching and admonishing one another, and they singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Paul steps in and tells them to be thankful while they do so, to have gratitude in their hearts as they teach and sing. And to not stop there, but to give thanks no matter what they do or say.
This morning, let's do the same. As we teach and admonish, as we sing, and as we go about doing whatever we do today, let's give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.
It's Thanksgiving. Let's not leave out the "thank you".
