Famous First Words
There is something very, very special about the last words of Jesus before he died on the cross.
They weren't his last words.
The most unbelievable and powerful thing about the story of Jesus Christ is the claim that after he died...he lived.
And not just in some super spiritual way, either. Jesus Christ was physically resurrected from the dead on the Sunday following the Friday of his crucifixion.
The story of Christ would not be the story of Christ without the resurrection. We would not know of Jesus the way we know of Jesus without the resurrection.
The cross was powerful. Words can not express its power adequately. We are desperate for the cross.
But without the resurrection, let's all just go home this morning, because our preaching is useless, our faith is futile, those who have died are lost, and we are still in our sins. (1 Corinthians 14-18)
The resurrection of Christ consummates the power of the cross. Isn't it just like God to make the most powerful thing about His message the thing that takes the most faith to believe.
So if his last words before he died were noteworthy, how about his first words after he came back to life?
