How To Live By The Holy Spirit

A few years ago, my daughter Callie decided she was going to learn to ride her bike. It became priority number one in her mind. At every turn, she was asking, "Dad, can we please go and learn to ride now?"

We went to the park; she hopped on, and took off! Then she fell. Then she cried. Falling hurt and getting up was hard. Trying again scared her.

But with fear and trembling, she did, again and again, with varying levels of success. One minute she would ride for 5 minutes and be encouraged, the next she would only go 10 feet before falling and be discouraged.

But she kept learning. She listened to my instruction. She experimented. She didn't let failure stop her. Now, she can ride her bike. So well, in fact, that she went with me to the canyon and road it in very tough conditions.

Learning to live by the Holy Spirit is much the same. You listen. You experiment. You don't let failure or discouragement stop you. But mostly, you decide you are going to learn how, making it priority number one in your life. Why? "Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God." (Romans 8:14)

Be as intent as Callie was on how to ride a bike, and before long, you will find yourself being led by the Spirit. Even (or especially) in very tough conditions.
