My mom once told me of a time when she and another woman, a stranger, just happened to be in the same place at the same time, and as it sometimes happens, they got to talking. My mom said something that hinted at the idea that she was a Christ-centered woman, and the other woman stopped and looked curiously at her.
"Do you drink?" the stranger asked.
I told my mom that this seemed a strange question to respond with. But my mom told me she instinctively knew exactly what she meant.
It comes from Paul, "The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free-and we were all given the one Spirit to drink." (1 Cor. 12:12-13)
"Yes," my mom replied, "I drink."
If the Spirit is as real as Jesus teaches, and if the Spirit offers the power that Jesus says He offers, and if the Spirit is as available as Jesus says He is, then who needs alcohol (or anything) around which to develop friendships?
Do you have drinking buddies? You need them. I'm grateful for this church family, and my small groups in particular...my drinking buddies.
