The Prince of Peace

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given...and he will be called Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:4

Really? Jesus? The prince of peace?

Isn't he the one who said, "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Mt 10:34)

Well, yes, but he also said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." (Mt 5:9)

Sure, but doesn't he say, "All men will hate you because of me." (Mk 13:13)

Yes, but he also says "Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other." (Mk 9:50)

So what gives here? Does Jesus bring peace or conflict? Does he reconcile or stir up trouble?

These tensions are resolved when Jesus says "My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (Jn 14:27)

Jesus says "My peace". His peace comes only after a fierce confrontation with all the things that steal your peace. And he came at Christmas to cause whatever trouble is necessary for you to have it.

Thank you, Christ, for the sword you brought to bring us peace.
