I'm sure the phrase has been used before, but it was made famous in the first Spider Man movie.
"With great power comes great responsibility."
It was said by "Uncle Ben" to a young man named Peter Parker who woke up one day having discovered that he possessed a "gift," the proportional strength of a spider. The movie shows him trying to navigate what to do with this gift. He tries using it only for personal income. He tries misusing it to take "shortcuts" in his life. He even tries denying that he has it (like so many of us) to escape any responsibility that it would demand of him, no matter how much his uncle's words haunted him.
But like you, Peter was stuck. He did have a gift. And because of that, like you, he does have a responsibility. And he, like you, was called to use it in a worthy way.
Today we will sit with some teachings of Paul that confirms that you have a special, unique gift. A unique power, so to speak. He teaches that you are to put it to use in the most worthy way...to unite with Christ's church.
Why?
Because...Jesus agreed with Uncle Ben. He said it this way in Luke 12:48: "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."
You have been entrusted with gifts and talents. Much is being asked of you. Not too much, mind you. But much. And you are perfectly equipped to deliver on the demand.
