Do you have a song?
I have a singer-songwriter friend named Kyle Hutton who came through town not long ago. I asked him to do a little mini-concert in my living room for my small groups, and let me tell you, Kyle doesn't have a song...he has dozens.
What I like most about Kyle's music is that each song comes from the deep well of his heart's experiences. I found myself a bit jealous because he has a whole catalog of songs that sort of "freeze in time" very important parts of his life. They make for a very cool "journal" of his life.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a song.
Hers also sprung from the deep well of her heart's experience, "freezing in time" a very important part of her life that is also very important to yours and mine.
It's found in Luke 1. It comes after an angel informs her that she was going to give birth to the Messiah, and after her visit to Elizabeth informing her of the same. She's in that crazy, oh-so-brief period of anticipation where she knows Jesus is coming, but he's not here yet.
It was in this period that she sings her song. In it we find her singing of God's favor, God's justice, and God's faithfulness.
Mary's song is useful and informative for us, but it was personal and overwhelming to her. Something that marked a monumental eye-opening for her about God's love.
We'll be singing with her today, using her song to praise God. But as we do, think through your life. Have you had a monumental eye-opening about God's love for you? Do you have a song?
No matter what they get for Christmas, anyone who journeys through Christmas and misses that, has missed the best news of their life
