"Who has known the mind of the Lord?" - Rom 12:34
Whoever it is, I want to know him. I want to ask him some questions. Observe his life. Evaluate his joy. Examine his character. Witness his work.
If there is anyone who has known the mind of God, I want to see what effect it has had on him. I want to see if the quality of his life is superior to mine.
And if it is, and I suspect it would be, I will want to imitate him. I want the quality of life of the man who has known the mind of God.
But back to Paul's question: Who has known the mind of the Lord? I've had a lot of teachers and preachers and Bible students claim that they know. And they sure haven't been shy in suggesting that if I just agree with what they think God has in mind that I will be saved.
But when I ask my questions, they are defensive. When I observe their lives, they are man-fueled. When I evaluate their joy, it's fleeting at best, and usually comes from something other than their message. When I examine their character, I see compromise or anger mixed in. When I witness their work, it has the appearance of wisdom but lacks transforming power. And when it is suggested that there may be more to what God had in mind, or that maybe there is a better source than them, they are offended.
But there is a better source then them. Than any of us. Just before he told us that if we would take on his work and life, his ways and beliefs, that we would find restful work and unburden some living, Jesus said, "No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son." (Mt 11:27a)
I imagine Paul knew the answer to his own question. That by asking people to figure out who it is that has known the mind of God, he would be leading us right to the feet of Jesus to learn.
In that verse above, Jesus said that there is one more group that knows the Father, in addition to the Son. Who are they? According to Jesus, they are "those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." (Mt 11:27b)
Let us go to the Son, and beg Him, desperate for our lives, to let us be among them that he would reveal the mind of the Father.
