It was seven years ago yesterday when my wife and I checked into Cy-Fair Hospital in Houston, TX - just the two of us. But a couple of days later when we checked out and headed home, there were three.
A baby boy named Shade Mashburn entered the world.
I distinctly remember my wife and me settling onto our couch with our new son in his "carrier" on the coffee table in front of us and thinking...so now what?
It occurred to us that to be responsible for steering a motor vehicle, we each had to go to driving school, pass written and experiential tests, and then be issued a license. On top of that, whenever we were out on the streets actually steering a vehicle, there were "helps" to do so safely and effectively. Stop lights, directional signs, maps, even police officers to hold us accountable for "doing it right".
But for steering the life of this brand new human being we hadn't been tested or licensed! We had read so-called directional signs and maps, but they all presented quite different landscapes. There were plenty of "police officers" attempting to hold us accountable for doing it right, but they all had different sets of rules and laws they were trying to enforce.
Today we recognize the newest members of our community. God has blessed us with another generation of people - our newest babies.
Humbly, we want to present them before God, whose love and hopes and dreams for these babies surpasses even those of their parents, and ask Him to shower down His favorite blessings on them.
And we want to commit ourselves to helping these parents, not as police-men, but as friends and family and helpers, all of us looking to God's love, Christ's example, and the Bible's guidance in training them up in the way they should go.
