Must I Be A "People Person"?

Disciple: Your teaching seems to imply that I must be a "people person" in order to follow you?

Master: What my teaching implies is that you are designed to have true loving relationships with God and people.

Disciple: I have seen "people persons" and I am nothing like them.

Master: I am not asking you to be like them. I'm asking you to be in true loving relationship with God and with people.

Disciple: But I'm not very social.

Master: I am not asking you to be social. I'm asking you to be in true loving relationships with God and with people.

Disciple: But when I get close to people, I get close to their "messiness" and that's uncomfortable for me.

Master: Then you will get to experience a bit of what I experienced. You will have the honor of suffering a bit of what I suffered. You will get to be like me

Disciple: Is there a way to follow you without the inconvenience and messiness and suffering that comes with entering into people's lives? People are so difficult!

Master: I asked my Father the same thing (Luke 22:42). I will tell you what He told me: "There is no other way."

Disciple: So am I doomed to a life of nothing but inconvenience, messiness, and suffering?

Master: No. I came to give you life...life to the full. You will have to trust me, friend, that I am not leading you astray. Walk into the inconvenience, messiness, and suffering that comes from intimacy with God and people, and there you will find your Life. You will find my Life. You will find me.
