Can you answer this? "What does the Scripture say?"*
Paul's asking, explaining that, "the holy Scriptures are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."* He believed this so much that he went around "proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ."*
The humble folks of Berea, "received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."* And this isn't always easy. Even the Apostle Peter said that Paul's letters "contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction."* It is the self-righteous and proud who do this, not the eager examiners. So be careful, for "Pride goes before destruction,"* And pride comes because "knowledge puffs up."*
So diligently study the Scripture. But check your reasons for doing so, because Jesus says, "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life."* In other words, Jesus says, "It's about ME, not about IT."
When you open Scripture, you're not on your own. Luke said Jesus "opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures."*
So let us pray that God would open our minds to understand the Scriptures as well. So, what was said about the first disciples can be said about us, "Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken."*
