Gatherings

The Southwest congregation has a history of enthusiastically supporting missions on both a local and international level. Following are some of the missions supported by Southwest.

LOCAL MISSIONS

High Plains Children’s Home

Located just south of the Amarillo city limits, High Plains Children’s Home was started in the late 1960’s by the Southlawn and Southside churches. High Plains Children’s home has been serving the Panhandle region by providing for children and adults with special needs who are orphaned, neglected, abused, dependent, underprivileged or otherwise taken advantage of. The Southwest congregation supports HPCH financially, by being the church home to cottages from time to time, and by oversight from the Southwest Elders. More information can be found about HPCH at www.hpch.org.

WTAMU Bible Chair/Buffs for Christ

Serving the students of West Texas A&M University since 1950 this vibrant ministry points students in Canyon to Christ as they journey through college. www.buffsforchrist.com

Prison Ministry

Lead by Gary Storrs, the prison ministry at Southwest exists to love those incarcerated in and around Amarillo. From teaching weekly Bible classes to serving as mentors, these men hope to spread the good news of Jesus to those serving time in prison.

Refugee Language Project

Refugee Language Project (RLP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Amarillo, Texas. RLP uses language as a doorway to welcome displaced people for the flourishing of the community and the glory of God. RLP welcomes refugees through programs that overcome language barriers and honor cultural diversity. Check them out on their facebook page or website. - www.refugeelanguageproject.org

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS

Project Philippines/Leyte Christian College

Project Philippines is a serious attempt to take the Gospel of Christ to the people of the Philippines and to provide much-needed educational resources so the children could grow up to know Jesus Christ. The first phase of Project Philippines is Leyte Christian College (LCC). LCC offers a four year Bible degree to students who are willing to study hard and want to take the gospel to their world. Soon, LCC hopes to offer other degree plans including English, Women’s ministry, and youth ministry. Project Philippines is led by Johnny and Robin Eastep and the Southwest church serves as the oversight congregation.

Chennai India

In 2014, Southwest began to help support a Minister in Chennai, India, named David. David has a thriving church that he ministers to. David also has a large group of preachers from other congregations that he teaches and encourages during weekly meetings. These preachers all have congregations in and around Chennai. Many are in small, poor villages, and they represent hundreds of Indian Christians. Southwest sends money monthly to help support the ministry David is doing. We also send money to help pay for a weekly outreach meal for his church in Chennai.

David is being a light for Christ-likeness in a country that is 99% Hindu. David sends us weekly pictures of baptisms, most of which are Hindus who are so grateful for the message of Jesus.

World Bible School

Many at Southwest are continually teaching the good news of Christ to seekers all around the world through the WBS correspondence lessons. From the prisons of the USA to the plains of Africa, people are making decisions for Christ because of the work of these faithful teachers.

Namikango Mission - Malawi, Africa

Namikango Mission is a ministry that operates in Malawi, Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world. Namikango (which means, “place of the lions”) was established in 1961, as response to a request from Malawian leaders for leadership training. Today, Namikango is an organization with 80+ staff members, serving a network of over 2000 congregations, providing health care and maternity services to 14,000+ patients per year, and a primary school, grades 1-8 with over 2000 kids. Our vision is to empower African communities through Christ-Centered transformation. Towards this aim, Namikango staff oversee and implement initiatives such as: microfinance, business training, women’s development, HIV training, conservation agriculture and permaculture. While each of these initiatives are stand alone, training thousands of people each year, they all come together into a two-year cohort model program called Discipleship Training Institute (DTI). As poverty is a multifaceted issue (physical, relational, emotional, spiritual), DTI equips leaders in Malawi to face these challenges. These leaders are then equipped to train others, so that the cycle of poverty can be broken. - www.namikango.org
